GIS & Drone Survey Project
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) utilizes Drone Survey and GIS (Geographic Information System) Mapping technologies for various projects.
Benefits of Drone Technology
- Enables micro-planning with high-resolution images (2.5 to 5 cm).
- Useful for detecting unauthorized constructions.
- Provides information on the status of facilities and land parcels.
- Images are easily accessible as per requirement.
- Highly useful and effective for accurate town development planning.
PMRDA Resources
- Drones: PMRDA has a fleet of drones, including Ninja, Ryno, and a bathymetry boat.
- Manpower: PMRDA has DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Government of India) certified personnel for drone operations and GIS analysis.
- Image Processing Lab: PMRDA is equipped with an image processing lab.
Key Projects and Surveys Conducted
The following is a list of key projects and surveys undertaken using drone technology:
- Mahalunge Man TPS
- Wadachiwadi TPS
- Holkarwadi TPS

- Indrayani River Rejuvenation Videography
- Ring Road Mapping
- Pawana River Mapping
- Indrayani River Mapping (Dehu)
Ongoing Projects
- Indrayani River Mapping
- Pawana Dam to Tiger & Lion point Pipeline Route Mapping
Applications of Drone Survey and GIS Mapping
- Ring Road Mapping with LULC (Land Use Land Cover) & Feature Identification: Drone surveys are used to map the ring road and identify various structures and land use types along its path. This includes identifying bridges, canals, houses, farm ponds, industrial areas, and other features.
- River Mapping & Bathymetrical Survey: Drone technology is employed for mapping rivers and conducting bathymetrical surveys (measuring water depth). Specific projects include surveys of the Indrayani and Pawana rivers.
- Skywalk Mapping: Drone surveys have been used to map areas such as the Lion and Tiger Point skywalk in Lonavala, including the mapping of parking areas and bridge areas.
- Amenity/Road Handover: GIS and drone surveys are used to verify and measure amenity and road areas during handover processes. This helps in identifying discrepancies between actual and recorded areas.
- Town Planning Scheme: Drone surveys are used in town planning schemes for plot layout overlap, plot demarcation with coordinates, and generating grid maps.
- Encroachment Mapping: Drone surveys and GIS are used to map and identify encroachments in areas under PMRDA’s jurisdiction.
- Property Card Mapping: Drone and GIS technology is utilized for property card mapping for the Land Record Department.
